Airbrush Stencils are a must for any airbrush artist.
It doesn't matter what you are painting on or with, airbrush stencils are absolutely necessary for maximum paint control. I know, I know, you know somebody that can free hand so well they don't need stencils. Yeah and I am a green leprichan from Africa! I can free hand as well as anybody, but it is Impossible to achieve a perfectly crisp line like that of a mask, without a mask.
There are two kinds of stencils for airbrushing. First there are the adhesive type. This type is adhesive backed and is typically transparent or translucent.
The other type is non adhesive or hand held stencils. I find it necessary to use both kinds of in my work. Any time I can, I use a non adhesive type.
To create real fire you always use this kind. So if you don't have a set I suggest you pick one up. I like the Mike Lavelle True Fire set. It has all the curves you could ever want or need and in 3 different sizes. These are laser cut so the curves are absolutely perfect. And most important, they are solvent proof. You just hold them in your hand and create shapes with them. The possibilities are practically endless. Just find the edge you want and spray.
And their internal shapes make a great tool for doing my own personal fire which I developed.
For adhesive typed airbrush stencils I use Transferite transfer tape, This stuff is great because it cuts easily enough and is transparent. I also occasionally use Art Mask by artool. I know there are also other types of materials used by airbrush artists like Sticky Mickey Tape, and gerber masking. There is also a liquid masking that is very handy and can be used for very large areas.
Non adhesive masking can be made out of just about anything. But some popular materials are Mylar, photo paper, thin plastic found in the craft section of your local department store. People also use playing cards and anything else that is thick enough to not flop around when sprayed against but thin enough to cut easily with a razor blade or exacto blade.

Airbrush Stencils: Tapes
Another kind of masking is done with fine line blue or green tape. This tape is purchased at automotive paint stores and is a must for any serious custom airbrush artist. You use this stuff to create tribal designs, custom Hot Rod flames and any other use you can think of. People debate over which is better, the blue or the green. Try them both and decide for yourself.
Other masking supplies include the 3m green tape which comes in various sizes as well as masking paper which is very crucial to large jobs like panels, Tanks and the like.
