So what features should you be looking for in an airbrush? That question can usually be answered by determining what you want to do with it. For instance, if you are going to try custom painting on automobiles, helmets, etc.. then you must have a model that can spray very fine detail and one that can atomize thicker more "grainy" paints like pearls and metallics. There are other factors as well in custom painting that you should know about.
That is just one reason for my airbrush recommendations. You should also be aware that not all airbrushes hold the same, the trigger doesn't feel the same and the mechanics are not as clean on some as on others. Cleaning and propensity to clog are also big factors. And of course the most important; they don't all spray the same. Cheaper models usually require a very high psi to properly atomize the paint and that means a lot of overspray and a sever limitation on free hand technique.
In addition to and directly related to the physical differences betwen airbrush models and manufacturers, is the quality of the output. It's a fact, with airbrush art the airbrush really does make a significant difference in the quality of the art work. a 25.00 dollar airbrush will perform very inadequately for any serious airbrushing applications and will limit the artist to a bare minimum of airbrushing potential.
A high quality airbrush will give years and years of enjoyment when properly cleaned and maintained. Their is an amazing array of special effects and techniques possible with a quality model as well. So my airbrush recommendation for you is not to waste time, money and frustration creating mediocre art with a cheap airbrush model. You can create beautiful and stunning art work on basically any surface with a high performance model.
A "cheap" car can end up costing a fortune in maintenance costs and time, and a cheap airbrush is no different. You really won't save money by purchasing a cheaper airbrush model. Until you have used a quality airbrush model you can't know what I mean. One of the main factors to consider when deciding on an airbrush is how much time do you want to spend cleaning your airbrush and how much time do you actually want to spend painting? The wrong airbrush will mean perpetual malfunctioning, ruined art work and the frustration that accompanies it. Your goal is to purchase the most maintenance free model you can. And there are models out there that are known for this feature.
Purchasing the right airbrush set up doesn't have to be a guessing game. Use the application index below to see my airbrush recommendation.
