I bought my Iwata Custom Micron years ago, and I use it all the time. The model I own is the CMC. No it doesn't have the cool micro air valve control. I've never seen the need for it, but if it floats your boat then go for it. If you are like me, the price tag on these things will make you choke. They are a bit spendy. But, as a professional custom painter, I can tell you that they live up to their price.
A New Choice on the Market
I bought my CMC years ago. It was the industry standard at the time. But Iwata just came out with their new Kustom Series
and, well... lets just say it's not nice to put a t bone steak in front of an old airbrush hound. Yeah, I bought one. and I definitely like it. The Kustom Series is made expressely for the custom painter because it is capable of spraying urethanes with ease. I even had no problem with spraying pearl! That comes in real handy when you are creating small ghost flames. And yes, they do have a (K) custom micron in this series.
Inexpensive Alternatives
If you just can't justify the price, there are other more inexpensive options to the Micron Series, airbrush depot sells some good alternatives. But I can't guarantee they work as well.
No Regrets
I have never regretted parting with the cash for this baby. When it is working right it is capable of some seriously tight airbrushing like the Revenge of the Sith Guitar I painted.
I chose the Custom Micron C because of the color cup size. It is gravity feed and holds plenty of paint at one time. The way the trigger handles is very smooth. I particularly use it when I am painting small and detailed work. Any way, this is my airbrush recommendation for fine detail and really subtle nuances.
One other thing about this airbrush is that it is designed to spray urethanes because the internal parts are solvent proof. So if that's what your looking to do then you can't do better than the CMC. It is also designed to spray at very reduced PSI, like 10-16 as opposed to 30 or 40 for other airbrushes! What does that mean? It means less over spray which means less masking and far better free handing.
The Iwata Custom Micron C, my airbrush recommendation to the airbrush freak who wants seriously mind boggling control.
